Trash the Dress Haunted House Style!

This dress was torn to bits in front of our eyes!  The bride Randi agreed to trash her real wedding dress and we had fun with it and did it with a Halloween theme.  This is a composite shot of multiple images taken with a tripod and then put together.  Happy Halloween!

Bride Rising out of a Coffin! Happy Halloween from Jason Lanier Photography

Ever seen a bride rise from the dead?!  Well, this one sure did.  We did this shoot a year ago for a special Trash the Dress shoot Halloween style and it was a blast!  I went and bought two fog machines at the Party Store for $75 bucks, found an awesome location where the home owners allowed us to shoot, and we made it happen!

I had one of my real former brides (Randi) agree to rip and trash her real wedding day dress.  The home owners had this coffin in their front yard for Halloween, so we put Randi inside the coffin with one of my video lights, and then put another video light next to the fog machine so it would illuminate the fog, and then I shot!  Thanks to Cameron and Steven for helping me with this shoot!

Being a young photographer

It's never too early to start training the right way!  Give your child a heads up in life by putting a Nikon in their hands at an early age.  They will thank you later on in life!

Hot Bite in Juneau Alaska

Wanna great place to eat?  Happen to be in Juneau Alaska?  Well, my family and I went to the Hot Bite and I'm telling you it's one of the best hamburger joints in the United States.  I'm sure each burger is about 1,500 calories, but MAN they taste great!

Juneau Bay Panoramic by Jason Lanier

This image was taken during my excusrion/adventure down to Alaska in May/June of 2011.  For this shot I chartered a boat so I could get the perspective from the water.  This is a 8-shot panoramic stitched together in Photoshop.  Hope you like it!

Mendenhall Glacier Waterfall Panoramic in Juneau, Alaska

This is a 7 picture panoramic taken of the waterfall next to the Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau Alaska.  It's about a 2-mile hike into the waterfall but it is TOTALLY worth it.  Just an absolutely amazing sight to witness and behold.

"Teamwork" by Jason Lanier

"No Girls Allowed!" Rebuilding the Boys Club House

This image was taken a year and a half ago in Juneau Alaska.  While there to do my landscape photography we happened upon this tiny shack in the middle of nowhere and I immediately thought, "Oh my gosh, that looks like a place I would love to have as a clubhouse if I was a little boy.  So we went to the store, bought outfits for my boys, got tools, and did a full fledged shoot there right in Juneau.  I'll tell you what, it really was awesome and I'm glad I take these opportunities to do shoots with my own kids as well.  And yes, they are triplets....

Alaskan Lighthouse...in the middle of the ocean

This image was taken on the Alaska Marine Highway between Haines and Juneau.  I just loved seeing this lighthouse sitting out there in this huge ocean with gigantic mountains behind it.  I really loved the sharp peak that was above it that made this picture really pop.  When you're choosing a subject or foreground for your image you can never forget to take into account the background as well.  Hope you like it!

Alaska Marine Highway- Panoramic Fine Art Landscape

This image was taken while I was on the the Alaska Marine Highway between Haines and Juneau.  It's an absolutely amazing stretch of ocean and the only way to travel on "land" or sea as there are no roads down there to connect the two.  This is a 10-shot panoramic and I just loved the reflection and the center Mountain peak that rose above the rest of the shot.  It is just a truly remarkable part of the world...

"Fallen Angel" at the Sugarshack

This image was taken at the Moundsville State Penitentiary in the famous Sugarshack where many not so great dealings took place.  There is artwork over all the walls that was made by the inmates while they were there, which definitely gives it a spooky feel.  Thanks to Debbie for bringing the wings!

West Virginia Country Roads

This image was taken during my workshop in West Virginia last week.  While driving to our site to shoot our model I stopped to grab this shot when I saw this gorgeous road.  After the "Frankenstorm" that's coming I doubt anything will be left of this, so I thought I'd post to show some better times.  I purposely got down into the ditch and shot this at an angle to give it a more distinct look.  Hope you like it!

Reflections of a bride at the Mosteller Mansion

This image was taken of my bride Daryl at the Mosteller Mansion last week during my wedding there for her and her husband Aaron.  It is an absolutely gorgeous venue with an abundance of places to shoot.  Every photographer loves mirrors and this place doesn't disappoint with numerous mirrors, especially in the bridal room, that make it so fun to shoot.  It of course doesn't hurt to have a BEAUTIFUL bride like Daryl as well!

"Holding Hands" a wedding in San Diego

This image was taken at my wedding last night for Paul and Jessica at the Bali Hai in San Diego.  The image was taken this was and wasn't cropped, I purposely wanted a shot that showed them holding hands over the skyline of San Diego with the moon above them.  It was such a beautiful night...I wish all weddings could have such tremendous weather!

Re-Post of the Moundsville Penitentiary Shoot

I'm re-posting this image because the first one I did while 35,000 feet in the air on my Delta Flight and it didn't post properly.  So I wanted to re-post it so you didn't think that I am okay with errors in the image.

"This image was taken yesterday at my workshop at the world famous Moundsville State Penitentiary. It is known worldwide for being one of the bloodiest prisons and most haunted places on earth. While at the Penitentiary we were able to conduct a radio interview with PBS, and shoot two gorgeous models with the help of a great group of photographers

and a great tour guide named Ryan Britt.

I want to send out a sincere thanks to everyone that came and a special thanks to Vanden King and Faye Santos for helping make this a success. This image was shot with the help of two Pocket Wizards that fired my SB910 speedlight which was located in the cell to the left of the model Yvonne. I put my Ray flash attachment onto my speedlight so it would better disperse the light. I then used two flashlights (thanks to those that held them) with one light on the stripes on her dress from the left with the other on her face from the right. That's how we did it!"

Classroom Session Production Still from a Jason Lanier Photography Workshop

This image was taken during day two of my workshop in West Virginia where we covered the Lightroom training session.  We had a great time and I can't thank everyone enough for coming.  That poor In N' Out shirt that I'm wearing ended up getting destroyed later on in the day when we did the trash the dress shoot...but it was worth it!  Thanks again to all my photography students who are really like family for coming!!

Wearing a halo inside of a bloody prison

This image was taken of me during the shoot last night at the Moundsville State Penitentiary last night! We had an angel outfit for the models and when it was time for the halo to come off the models head it went onto mine!  Like so many times during my workshops things end up on my head and stay there for the duration of the shoot...like the 2 foot sunhat that I wore on the subway in New York.  Nothing better than a little fun!

PBS Radio Interview...inside the Moundsville State Penitentiary!

Last night I had the amazing opportunity to conduct a radio interview with PBS inside the Moundsville State Penitentiary.  While out here doing the workshop they contacted me and asked if we could do an interview, and we ended up connecting at the Moundsville Penitentiary of all places!  It was an awesome experience and I can't thank them enough for taking the time to interview me about photography, workshops, and where the industry is today!  I always love doing things like this but I have to say that I've never done it in a place like the Moundsville State Penitentiary...AWESOME!

Country Roads take me home....West Virginia

This is a production image of me shooting at the magic hour as the sun was setting...just an amazing place.  This is just such an amazing place...so grateful I get to do this stuff!

Rolling in the mud...at a Jason Lanier Workshop

This is an image taken yesterday at my workshop in West Virginia.  We did a trash the dress shoot and got absolutely filthy...this shot was taken before I fell into the mud and to the right of me you can see Faye and Debbie really starting to get into it.  We shot in front of an old coal mine that was just amazing.  Can't wait to share pics!

Shooting at night in a cemetery- production still from a Jason Lanier Workshop

This image was taken yesterday at my workshop.  We were starving hungry and tired but couldn't pass up the opportunity to shoot in a cemetery at night.  We used car lights, video lights, and off camera flash to make it happen...and it was AWESOME!

Trashing the Dress at a Jason Lanier Workshop

This is a production image taken yesterday at my trash the dress session at my West Virginia Workshop.  My great friend Vanden King has a tremendous farm where we went and shot, and this is done in front of an old coal mine that's something like 150 years old.  I can't thank everyone enough for coming and participating and especially Vanden for letting us use his farm and for Megan and her amazing modeling skills.  And yes, that's my big noggin you see in the left side of the shot...

Mosteller Mansion Magic- the wedding of Aaron and Daryl King

This is an image of the wedding for Aaron and Darly King who were married today, Saturday October 20, 2012 at the Mosteller Mansion in Hickory, North Carolina.  This was truly one of the most amazing, magical, and fun weddings that I've ever shot.  From the bride and groom, to the wedding party, to the family and friends there, everyone was just so amazing.  The mansion alone was a spectacular venue that had so many places to shoot that anyone in their right mind should consider this place if they are looking for an amazing location to get married.

Thanks again to Aaron and Daryl for allowing me to be part of their truly magical day!!!

Lake of Ice- Yukon Canada

This image was taken 18 months ago in the famous Yukon as we traveled through Canada on our way from Anchorage towards Southern Alaska.  This was taken in late May when it's still not as warm as it is in July or August, so you are still able to capture the ice which was amazing.  When I look at this picture I remember the look on my three boys faces when they saw the ice and how excited they were to throw rocks in it to try and break it up.  I of course told them to wait until I was done shooting...:)

Up Close and Personal with Grizzly Bears in Alaska

As I'm preparing for a workshop next week I'm going through some images for my presentation.  I came across this one in Alaska that shows just how close the Grizzly Bears are to us as the photographers which I thought would be fun to share with you guys.  This was in Katmai Alaska and it was AWESOME!  This same bear came and walked right in front of me with her cub.  It's truly a surreal experience and I've done it twice now and can't get enough!

Destruction Bay- Traveling through the Yukon in Canada

This is a panoramic image taken in May 2011 as we traveled from Anchorage to Juneau through Canada...because it's the only way to drive down there.  We spent the night in Destruction Bay and there was this amazing layer of ice that you see on the right.  I waited for awhile for the sun to set with my boys and we captured this image.  It was beautiful.

Indian Weddings- portrait of Aliya

This image was taken at a wedding of mine for Justin and Aliya 4 years ago in Chantilly, Virginia.  It is almost exactly 4 years to their anniversary, I can't believe it!  Well, when Aliya came out of her room and was ready to walk down the aisle, I had the great opportunity to be able to shoot her for about 3 minutes before she did.  I asked her to slightly look down and smile, and this is what I got.  Her wedding dress and veil were beyond gorgeous and her smile...well, it speaks for itself.

Bridal Russian Blushers- simply stunning

I love all types of veils because as a photographer it gives us SOOO much to play with.  One of my favorites types are the Russian Blushers that cover just a portion of the face.  I love them because they look so vintage while still looking so modern and amazing.  It also gives us the ability as photographers to do some fun shots like this one where we light the veil and shoot through it.  This image was taken a few years back in Maui Hawaii and is the same bride that I did the fantasy shoot for that is the icon picture on my Facebook page.  Just sharing more images and thoughts from things that I see as I'm working on the new website!

Upcoming Workshops:

Laziest Bride in the World...and probably one of the happiest!

This image was taken in the US Virgin Islands on St. John during one of my bridal shoots/trash the dress shoots.  It was so much fun and the bride was totally amazing.  The funniest thing is that as peaceful as this looks, it was actually pretty rough under the tree when the waves would come up.  I actually got my foot cut pretty good because the water brought up some rocks and rolled it right over my foot.  But hey, that's what it's like to be a photographer!  Another image found as we prepare the new website.

Next Workshops:

Swimming in Rose Petals- Bridals by Jason Lanier

This image was taken of a beautiful bride named Abbie Bluhm during his bridal session.  Believe it or not this was shot in her bedroom with two red sheets that I bought at Bed, Bath, and Beyond.  We laid the sheets one the bed and then on the headboard, I went to a local florist and bought 4 bags of rose petals, and then while standing on a ladder my assistant threw and rained down rose petals on her. She was and is so beautiful from the inside and outside that it made the shoot just unbelievable.  I found this shot while going through my images for the new website.  Hope you like it!

Engagement Shots- the start of the Love Story..

I really love when I get to take the engagement shots of my new wedding couples.  This is wedding booking season and it's one of my favorite times of the year as I get to meet so many new and excited couples who are preparing for their big day.  The engagement session allows me the opportunity to see them interact with each other, and allows them to get to feel very comfortable in front of the camera.  In 2013 all Jason Lanier Photography Packages will contain an engagement session because I think it's so vital for the relationship between the wedding couple and the photographer.  I can't wait to start doing some more!

Photographers- what you do truly does matter....

As a photographer you are not just taking pictures, you are capturing time and freezing it forever.

I would give anything to have a professional picture of me with my Dad who passed away 6 years ago. If you understand how important your role is as a photographer you will understand just how much your clients are depending on you to capture that Grandma, Grandpa, Brother or Sister etc. who migh

t pass away for some reason after the wedding, or any other event that you shoot.

I can't tell you how many times I've had clients tell me that they've ended up using my images of a Grandma or Grandpa for their funeral service because it's the last image that was taken of them.

What you do truly does matter.

Sore Loser- Poker Picture Fantasy Shoot by Jason Lanier

This image was taken last week at my fantasy shoot for Paul and Jessica at the Christmas House Inn and Gardens.  Paul and Jessica actually met while playing poker, so they decided to play it up for their fantasy shoot.  We had a fun time doing this shoot because Jessica would throw the cards and poker chips, I would throw some cards as well, and then we'd pick them all back up and do it again!  Hope you like it!

Every Man Should Chase His Woman- Making a shot out of nothing!

This is one of my all-time favorite images.  This was actually taken on the side of a road in Victorville California in what ended up being an 8-minute shoot.  The Ceremony started very late and ate into virtually all of our time before the Reception.  I told the bride and groom to follow me in the car and I found a tiny dirt road across from a hospital.  We pulled over and I purposely had the car pointed to the side so I could shoot it with the cement road directly behind me.  I practiced this one time with the bride and groom and then told him to chase her around the car....and it worked!  What we really had to work on was the positioning of their hands/legs and feet, which can be done even while running.  Hope you like it!

Carry me away- wedding images from Laguna Canyon, California

Another image that I'm finding from preparing for the new website!  This one is from the wedding of Christina and Mike Nash back in December 2010.  We had some time in between the ceremony and reception and we went down to the beach.  But while we were driving there we passed this amazing field located in Laguna Canyon.  Mike being the manly man that he is picked up his beautiful bride and started carrying her away.  Start working out grooms!  Every bride wants a man that can carry her away....

Finding Lost Art- Bridals in Maui, Hawaii by Jason Lanier

One of the biggest benefits to doing a new website is going through your images and finding something that you totally overlooked in the past.  This image was taken nearly 3 years ago in Maui Hawaii with a beautiful bride named Patricia.  I was reviewing with our design team on what we had and going through my Hawaii images and found this gem.  Thanks GOODNESS I had the Raw file so I could edit it with my skills from today because if I only had a jpeg I'd be stuck with my editing from 3 years ago and wouldn't be able to use it.

For this shot I knelt down on the ground and really wanted to make it appear as if she was a world almost like Jurassic Park, where everything else is HUGE.  This wasn't done through photoshop, it's done by understanding and shooting for unique perspectives.  And the funny thing is by making her so small in the image she actually commands the entire focus of the image.  Hope you like it!
