Full Breach- breaching Humpback Whale in Juneau, Alaska

This image was taken about an hour away from Juneau Alaska back in June of 2011.  Having gone whale watching many times, it's difficult to capture a breach because either the whale doesn't feel like doing it, the boat is facing the wrong direction, or your camera isn't ready.  To get a shot like this it all has to come together to make it happen.  I captured the entire jump sequence of this beautiful animal and I am so happy that I had this opportunity!

Next Workshops:

  • Myrtle Beach, SC- November 6-7
  • Tampa, Florida- November 13-14

Camera settings: Nikon D3, 1/1600 sec at f/7.1, 135mm at ISO 640, flash did not fire.  Taken at 2:34pm on June 3, 2011 by Jason Lanier.
